Belmont Shore Residents Association MINUTES EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETING July 12, 2012 The meeting was called to order by Vice President Terence Endersen at 6:00 pm. The other members of the Executive Board present were: Marvin Jones, Aileen Colon and Julie Dean. President Kurt Borsting, Treasurer Robert O'Connor, Secretary Jeff Miller and Executive Board members John Forstrom, Chrisjeon Clemmer, Max Alavi and Robert Stropky were absent. Nineteen additional BSRA members and visitors were present. The agenda for this meeting and the minutes of the June 14, 2012 meeting were approved. East Division Lieutenant Kanaley gave the LBPD report. He advised of 5 robberies this month; 3 arrests were made. Terry Endersen brought up the statistics below:
Lt. Kanaley advised that Burglaries are a major trend in the city. Shannon’s and Verizon both had incidents recently. Stealing technology seems to be a big trend. Many of the issues we’re facing in our division are being faced throughout the city. LBPD is dedicated to maintaining a walking beat, especially during high issue hours/summer traffic increase/late at night. They have been successful on some of the personal assaults and robberies. San Bernardino is the third city in the last month to file bankruptcy and there seems to be fear of a domino effect. Long Beach has also been hit with budgetary problems. There will be a lot of maneuvering and fighting over dollars, however the Commander is dedicated to current manpower numbers. BSRA members advised: · The following locations were vandalized/broken into: the Bay Shore Library, the Belmont Shore cheese shop and the Naples car detail business · Last week in the alley between Glendora and Pomona, bolt cutters were used to break open garages and back gates in order to steal several bicycles There will be an LBPD East Division Community gathering on Monday, July 23 from 630-8p at the Long Beach Water Treatment Plant at 2950 Redondo Avenue (at Spring Street and Redondo Avenue). The guest speaker will be Susan Price, Bureau Manager of Community health, Department of Health and Human Services. For more information email lbpdeast@longbeach.gov or call 562-570-5880. Dede Rossi from the BSBA reported there will be a Stroll and Savor event Wed-Thu, July 18-19, 2012. Dede advised that the police were handing out jaywalking tickets last Thursday. Dede explained that 866 Belmont Shore employees have signed up for free bus passes through the new employee bus program, which will hopefully be extended. The Belmont Shore Car Show will be held Sep 9, 2012. Per Dede, there are no laws regarding restaurant patio dining and dogs. All patio restaurants in Long Beach, not just the Shore, have the option to allow dogs on the patio. There are laws stating that if dogs are allowed on the patio: the Servers cannot prepare food, they can pour water and they cannot pet any dogs. Rite Aid would like to come to Belmont Shore Residents Association meeting next month to talk about their upgrade. The Office building across from library has been sold and it looks as if they will probably become more offices. Ryan Watkins, Assistant to the owner, overseeing construction and law, from California Shabu Shabu Japanese restaurant (next to Legends) spoke. He advised they will have pretty simple fare: high quality, low complexity. There has been some discussion about their alcohol license (11 conditions). California Shabu Shabu is hoping to develop a great relationship with the Belmont Shore residents. They have no emphasis on alcohol. They recently opened a restaurant in Santa Monica. The Belmont Shore restaurant has 2400-2500 square feet, counter service, one- half to three-fourths of the restaurant is set up for dining with 34 seats. They are planning a mid to late Aug opening. There will be no patio dining and their hours will be 1130a-2p and 5p-10p. They plan to cutoff alcohol at 945p. Sweet Jill’s advised they do not have a lease anymore, but that they are working to stay in the Shore. Julie Maleki heard that Baja Fish Taco will replace it. Julie Maleki from Third District Councilman Gary Delong's office covered the following items: · Provided California Shabu Shabu ABC conditions · Asking for assistance to plant median trees on Argonne at Broadway on July 21. They will be starting with irrigation next week · The Livingston rebuild contract should go before the city before the end of this month; the contractor should start in late August. Will advise of more finalized construction time as available · Gary Delong’s monthly lunch will be Thursday, July 26 at 1145a where the new fire chief will be the guest · Team is working hard to have some irrigation on Broadway Eric Forsberg, with the Parking Commission, reported that the trial employee bus program has provided over 800 bus passes. The program will probably be extended another 6 months while they continue evaluation. The bus company has a computer system that can show where/when they board and can look for fraud. There are 1200 Belmont Shore employees, so 800 is a great showing and the Parking Commission is optimistic. The Parking Commission will meet again Thursday, July 19 at 8a at the Bay Shore Library. Beach Subcommittee Meeting, Thursday July 26 at 4p will discuss beach vendors at the Third District Field Office (340 Nieto Ave). Vice President Terry Endersen covered the President’s report: Regarding the length of Walk Signals, it is true that one must press the Walk Button to instigate the Walk Signal and give the walker enough time to get across the street. The Bay Shore closure occurs from June 15 through Sep 15 from 9a-5p. The Broadway & Ximeno restriping will be reviewed further. (this has since been corrected) There will be a Disaster Preparedness meeting on Tues/Wed July 24 and 25 at 530p at the Long Beach Fire Dept Station #8 at 5365 E. Second Street in Belmont Shore. Firefighter, Instructor and Spokesperson for the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) will identical, free, 30 minutes presentations on CERT to representatives from the Belmont Shore business community as well as neighbors in the residential blocks. Attendance is encouraged. For more information, please contact Robert Campbell of the La Verne Avenue Community Watch between Second and The Toledo in Belmont Shore at 562-434-9867. There were no Secretary or Treasurer reports. No old or new business. Public comment: From Bobby: Eric Lopez gave a great report but when he left, the BSRA had come to the conclusion and advised him that the new beach path should be on the street side, not on the ocean side, but it appears Eric might be confused because he is now talking about having the new path on the ocean side and said this when he presented to Parks & Rec. Bobby does not believe it makes sense to have it on the ocean side and advised that as an example, last Sunday the beach was very busy and if the new path was on the ocean side, it would have displaced many of beachgoers. Eric Lopez will be at Beach Subcommittee meeting on July 26, so this can be discussed further. The meeting was adjourned at 7:10 pm. Submitted by: Julie Dean
